How to transplant a 20-yr old peach tree?

My then 4-yr old assiduously nurtured a wretch of a dying sapling and pulled it from the brink of tree heaven. Apparently perseverence also works in the corporate world, and It’s fitting for his coming children to have this memento in their own garden. Logistics dictate much of the tree’s crown be cut. How much is too much, and when, please? Many Thanks!

this is a dangerous move…that’s a mature tree……. have it professionally done….

the suggestion of the root pruning is a good one, but should be done by the guys who will be moving the tree…… root pruning…that works good if you have plenty of time before the move…. what it does is cause the tree to put out new feeder roots to replace those lost when you cut around the tree’s root ball….so the new roots are already there when the tree is transplanted and it should recover from the move much easier…. the trick is, tho, to do it well ahead of the move… a year ahead if possible…. at least a few months….. time for the new roots to grow and establish themselves….

if this tree is that important, you MUST not take the chance of doing the move….. hire it done…. get an arborist out there to show you how to root prune it and give you suggestions of who to call to move it… then let them do the work….it will be worth the cost…..
