Logistics Job Openings

Current scope of Logistics /shipping/forwarding jobs in US?

Having worked for almost 4 years in the Middle East for one of the leading freight forwarding / Logistics Company.I am planning to Migrate to the US in the coming months.Frankly would like to know if there are any good job openings in this industry out there in the US?

The transportation industry in the U.S. has been in a depression for about the last 6 months. Rates have been lower than some have seen in over 30 years by some accounts. The volume of freight has also been down to a trickle compared to 6 months ago. Thousands of trucking companies have gone out of business in the last year. This slow down has effected other segments of the transportation industry. Ironically, some of the current problems in the trucking industry can be attributed to some degree to Logistics Companies. The lower volume of freight availability has resulted in a price cutting frenzy in most segments of the trucking industry driving prices down to unacceptable levels. Many will not survive. When the U.S. economy turns around this should result in shippers and logistics companies paying higher than average prices to move their freight. Their greed during this time will result in fewer trucks being available to haul what will be an over abundance of freight. Supply and demand will force haul rates to unprecedented levels. I would expect rates to be at least double to triple current rates.

The current situation has had a positive effect on rail. With some companies have switched to rail to move their products across the country in an effort to save on shipping costs. Some trucking companies have also utililized rail to move their trailers across the country for shippers who’s products are not time sensitive.

Lower consumer demand in the U.S. has resulted in fewer shipments coming into the country which reduces the need for ships to move products from across the globe. Unless consumers are buying importers don’t need to bring in more products.

The general slow down has forced some companies to reduce payroll or freeze any hiring. If you want to make the move I would suggest you first have money to pay all living expenses for at least 6 months to 1 year. I also suggest you have a solid job offer before making the move. We don’t know how long this depression will last and most companies, especially in the logistics are in crisis. There will still be some hiring but those who are adding personnel will likely try to hire those whom they can pay the least to get the job done.

You could check some of the trade publications to get some job leads and see who may be hiring. Some will list jobs in these publications. There are some large logistics companies in the U.S. Many of them have their own websites and may list available jobs on those sites.
