Work In Fleet Management

Fleet managers are found in manufacturing, in companies which run a fleet of vehicles, car leasing companies, and more commonly fleet management consultancies. Their job is to oversee and manage the vehicles assigned to them, and they are responsible for;

  • Developing business and making new contacts
  • Overseeing the maintenance and repair of the vehicles, including services, and keeping all paperwork in order
  • Managing staff and organising cover for staff absences
  • Looking for new more cost-effective vehicle suppliers
  • Arranging for new fleets when required
  • Recording mileage and fuel costs
  • Keeping accident reports
  • Being aware of the location of all vehicles at all times, and the availability as regards staff needs
  • Keeping and updating all financial information as regards the fleet with regard to such things as depreciation

In order to work as a fleet manager you will need to have managerial experience and preferably experience of working in Logistics or transport administration. The job requires a lot of organisational ability and an interest in and competency in I.T. There are BTECs and HNDs in related subjects such as logistics or operations management which would be useful. Some larger companies may offer graduates a place on a training scheme to become a fleet manager, which would be comprehensive and cover all aspects of the job including administration, business systems and policies.

In order to further a career in this area there are courses provided by the ICFM (The Institute of Car Fleet Managers) which offer three levels of accreditation, depending on the experience of the fleet managers. These include a first introductory certificate, providing basic background knowledge of the principles involved in car fleet management, a certificate which goes into detail about the legal and business aspects of the job, and, lastly the diploma which is based around the financial, computing and quality assurance aspects of the job.

Fleet managers are an important part of the organisation and the pay reflects this. Starting salaries are usually around £25,000 rising to £40,000. Those who assume further strategic responsibilities could be on £50,000 plus.
